CASE STUDY 1

Cognitive AI for creativity and creative problem solving (Research)

Creativity and creative problem solving are important skills both for human wellbeing. Working creatively and solving problems makes us feel like we are expressing ourselves – as a result we find more meaning in our work, and feel powerful enough to solve things.
 
At the level of human history of civilisation, it is the skills of creativity and creative problem solving that have ensured many of our leaps in progress, discoveries and works of art. Because of this, we have studied creativity and creative problem solving and published extensive research on this.
 
We have learned:
  • how to build cognitive AI systems that can solve tasks in similar ways as humans, thus paving the way for creative cognitive AI assistants in the future
  • how to measure human creativity better, using bespoke AI systems that can help.
 
Cognitive AI systems are artificial systems used to model the way human cognition works. They attempt to solve tasks in similar ways as humans, and they enlighten us into how the human mind may be organizing and storing information, or processing it to achieve various results.
 
We built systems aiming to make them able to solve a variety of creativity skills, using a unified set of cognitive processes / algorithms. Our topics of high interest consist in:
association – the ability to come up with a new idea by using associations to older ideas
creative use of objects – the ability to use objects creatively – for example, if you do not have a vase, the ability to use a cup instead; if you don’t have a hammer – the ability to use a shoe
insight – the ability to have lightbulb moments in which information is seen in a new way, allowing for new solutions to happen
 
We have built an artificial intelligence system that can answer to Remote Associates questions. This is a test of human creativity, in which the human is given three words, and asked to come up with a fourth one, related to all three of them. For example, you are given the words COTTAGE – SWISS – CAKE, and, if you are creative, you will be able to say that CHEESE relates to all three of them. Our system comRAT can solve these queries, and also correlates to human performance while doing so. Our journal article on artificial intelligence for remote association is here.
 
We have also built an artificial intelligence system that can come up with creative uses for objects. Our system OROC proposes that you can use a vase to drink from, a flowerpot to store things in, a pan to defend from rain with, dental floss can be used to sew with, etc. Our journal article on artificial intelligence for creative object use is here.

Future of work AI (Building SaaS / AIaaS products)

How satisfactory is it to hire or get hired at the moment?

To solve this problem and allow humans with a great potential, creative problem solving skills and personality to be hired and found more often by companies, we are building CreaIntel – an artificial intelligence platform for testing future employees in the recruitment stage.
 
What is special about CreaIntel?
Until very recently, the standard opinion was that “Technical skills and knowledge can be measured; experience, with some persistence, can be verified; but creativity is more mysterious. ”
 
We have built AI that can measure multiple factors in creative intelligence, thus allowing for better hires which can produce more innovation. From the job applicant perspective, it means you can get opportunities based on talents companies could not measure before. You might thus get interesting work that fits your talents even if you do not have the perfect background, because we can measure that you can do this kind of work, and you will thrive doing it!

Social engagement AI (Consulting and supporting Start-ups)

Rich social lives are a marker of wellbeing, and meaningful work is one too. Boosting social engagement at work would therefore help human wellbeing and give employees happier and more performant workers.
 
Our experts have started supporting a startup which builds AI tools for social engagement. We are advising on the developing and testing of this AI product, and its related human factors. We are very excited by the area of wellbeing this startup and set of tools addresses.

CASE STUDY 4

Time Saving AI (Research + Citizen AI Science)

Do you feel like time escapes you, and at the end of the day you have achieved little of those things that would have made you feel the day was “yours”? Do you feel perpetually in a hurry, like you are barely drawing your breath from one appointment to another? Would you like to know HOW to use your time or plan your day in such a way that it feels like you have an abundance of time in your hands, rather than being a time pauper?
 
We are doing research on what enables people to feel like they have time, the right interventions to help them feel time abundance and designing the AI methods to support you in this in the future. We are partnered with Time Rich Me , a time management habit creation website to understand what helps them users increase time happiness and design AI methods that can support people get better at achieving time abundance.

CASE STUDY 5

Relationships and Artificial Intelligence (Product building)

Some wise heads out there have proclaimed in various forms that the quality of your life is the quality of your relationships. Knowing that relationships do indeed have an influence on happiness and general wellbeing, and that many people report an interest in improving their relationships, we have decided to dedicate an AI product to improving relationships.
 
A theory we are using in the creation of this product is Sternberg’s theory of Love stories. Robert Sternberg postulated that Love is a Story people tell themselves in a variety of ways. This narrative of love people find most natural is reflected in the way they approach relationships. Sternberg further identified 26 types of love story – each with productive or toxic consequences of their own. Here are some stories:
  • The Teacher-Student story – In this story, a partner enjoys the role of teacher, and the other that of learner. These roles may be pervasive across the relationship, or partner may switch roles in different fields – for example one may be the teacher when it comes to social interaction and involvement, while the other may be the teacher when it comes to sports and adventures.
  • The Sacrifice story – When employing this story as a way to view the relationship, the person believes sacrifices need to be done repeatedly for the relationship, in order to ensure its survival. It may even be that the person in this story is only happy in a relationship if he/she is in the role of the giver, encountering difficulties in “taking” or being supported in turn by their partner.
  • The Garden story – In this story the relationship is seen as a garden that needs continuous nurturing. In some ways the opposite of the happily-ever-after fairy tale, in which partners believe nothing needs to be done to maintain the relationship, in the Garden story one or both partners believe the relationship needs constant watering and protection from pests.
 
The AI product we are developing helps people understand in which story they are, and shape their narrative and that of their partners towards positive relationship outcomes.
